How to stick to your diet while on vacation

Eating right can be difficult for you at home, so it can seem quite daunting while you travel. Lots of people travel to let loose, relax, and indulge, but it is possible to enjoy a trip and watch your waistline. Travel is a great way to make better exercise and food choices.

6 important things you can do to stick to your diet while on vacation

It’s not unusual to arrive at your destination in a drastically different time zone, forced to stay up until a reasonable bedtime, but wake up at 5:00am anyways. Use this to your advantage and go for a run.  Better yet pop into a gym and check out the local eye candy while burning calories. Not only will you get a work out, but it’ll also help reset your body’s clock, tire you out, and hopefully allow you to settle into the time zone more quickly.  Don’t waste time frustrated that you can’t sleep when you can use it to your advantage. The same works when you can’t go to sleep at night, head out and get some exercise to wear yourself down.

Your diet controls your energy levels, metabolism, and your weight. You can exercise until you are blue in the face but food is the the biggest factor to keeping those pounds off.  It is easy to over eat on vacation but that can be avoided. The science is all over the place. Some research shows that you should eat small healthy amounts frequently throughout the day. Others show that you should eat once a day and take advantage of intermittent fasting.

Travel can actually provide a great opportunity to try both options.  Since you are out and about it’s easy to distract yourself all day until dinner and try out that intermittent fasting trend.  On the flip side as you explore there will be food options everywhere, you can easily pop in and try healthy little bites at a bunch of places.  The most important thing is to make sure that you get the number of calories that your body requires to keep up with the activity you are doing in the day.

One of the best ways to set up a perfect day for adventure is to eat breakfast that is filling and high in energy like fruit and yoghurt or oatmeal.  Eggs are a great source of protein, but the cheese, bacon, pancakes, and all that other traditional breakfast stuff doesn’t really make you feel full for very long.  Find something that keeps you feeling full most of the day and then save the calories for dinner.  If you have inexpensive breakfast that keep you full enough to skip lunch, have an early dinner at a more expensive restaurant. Higher end restaurants keep up on health trends, and can easily make amazing meals that are both nutrient rich, and relatively healthy.

Alcohol is one of the biggest culprits to vacation calories.  Blended, sugary, fruity drinks.  Beer at the local leather bar. Mimosas at brunch. Wine with every meal.  Sounds like a perfect vacation! Unfortunately, this will throw your calorie count through the roof. It easier to wake up and get that work out in early, and see more of the destination if you aren’t hung over. Pick a weekend night to have the big party night and check out the local gay hot spots, but keep the drinking down the rest of the time. If you are going to drink pick lower calorie drinks like vodka-soda, tequila soda lime, or have a non alcoholic mocktail. You can still have a good time, get a nice buzz, burn some of those calories dancing with the hot guy you met at the gym.  Just stay clear of the excess sugar.

The same rules that apply to diet at home, apply when you are traveling. Instead of using travel as a chance to indulge, find a way to bring in that health tip you’ve been meaning to try!
