Style Profile: Plastique Pusséy, Los Angeles

Today we are featuring Plastique Pusséy (AKA Karl Jacobs), who won second prize in our 2018 Halloween contest. You may also remember her from this 2017 interview.

Plastique was born in the small New England town of Brockton, Massachusetts into a strict Jehovah's Witness household. At the tender age of 5 Plastique picked up her first needle and thread with which she would sew face towels, table cloths, and outfits for her sister's barbie dolls. Once the costume-design seed was planted, she devoted every day of her life to making the world around her more glittery.

With a background in costume/fashion design, puppetry, mask-making, special effects makeup, set design, and doll making (to name a few), Plastique carries the liveliest of fascinations and the most child-like of curiosities about the world of 3-D design and textiles.

Plastique's activism in the Black community as well as the LGBTQIA+ community has been a constant factor both prior to and throughout her career as a designer and a performer. Plastique currently resides in Los Angeles, CA where she creates garments for clientele consisting of (but not limited to) drag and cabaret performers, recording artists, entertainers, actors, and bridal clients.

Monster Dress

A Plastique Pusséy original design and creation. This look is inspired by what I believe a Monster High Doll on her way to the club would look like. She has a simple rhinestone chainmail mini dress with a sequins face on it and even her dress is doing it's makeup and serving face! And her hair is as untamable as her spirit itself as a mass of pink and teal cotton candy raining all around her. Complete with a fuzzy fuchsia faux fur coat and pink sequins boots.

Where did you grow up & where do you live now?

I grew up in Brockton, Massachusetts and now live in LA.

How do you think your friends would define your style?

Cartoonish, Delicious and Unapologetic

What’s your favorite item in your wardrobe?

My favorite item would definitely be my Pink Panther costume. She so pink, obnoxious, sparkly and she only leads to show up to the party to drive the folks up the wall!

What’s your biggest style challenge?

My biggest style challenge is that I haven't found out how to permanently bedazzle my body.....YET!!!

Which literary figures do you most admire?

The Queen of Hearts from Alice in Wonderland has ALWAYS captivated me. In the book she is an actual playing card and upon reading fist reading that book I always imagined her making a runway entrance into her court or garden. The Queen LITERALLY slays that entire chapter !

Who’s your style icon?

My favorite style icons are between Josephine Baker and Bob Mackie. They are both on a level of extra that I have devoted my glittery, queer life to achieving!
