Just ahead of Saint Patrick's Day, Ireland's openly gay prime minister Leo Varadkar and his boyfriend had brunch with the one and only Mike Pence.

"Thanks to the Vice President and his sister for a lovely morning at his home. What a great way to start this St Patrick’s weekend," Varadkar tweeted.

Vice President Mike Pence invited me and Matt to his home at the Naval Observatory this morning. It’s great to be back here for a really warm reception. pic.twitter.com/Wkh2Ic8lWP

That's a subtweet if I've ever seen one.

Our infamously anti-LGBTQ Vice President hosted the prime minister during his visit to the White House. Varadkar even spoke about his sexuality at the Naval Observatory.

"I lived in a country where if I’d tried to be myself at the time, it would have ended up breaking laws," he said, The Advocate reports.  "But today, that is all changed. I stand here, leader of my country, flawed and human, but judged by my political actions, and not by my sexual orientation, my skin tone, gender or religious beliefs."

This is the first time Pence has invited one of the few openly gay world leaders to his home. Advocate also notes that Pence's wife, Karen, did not attend the breakfast though Varadkar said, "they were very well briefed," and "they said both Matt and I would be very welcome to visit their home in future.”

The Trump Administration and Pence have a long-documented anti-LGBTQ history including the trans military ban, license to discriminate bills, marriage equality opposition, Pence's notorious suggestion to move HIV program funds to support sexuality conversaion, and most recently, Pence defending his wife's decision to work at a school that doesn't allow LGBTQ kids or employees.
